Cookie policy

The short version

This website sets no cookies. Not for analytics, not for preferences, not for anything. It also stores nothing in your browser: no local storage, no session storage, no IndexedDB, no service worker.

Nothing about your visit is kept on your device between page loads. There is nothing to consent to and nothing to clear — the one opt-out on offer is a flag you can set yourself to stop being counted at all (see "The visitor counter").

Check it yourself

You do not have to take our word for it. Open your browser's developer tools on any page of this site:

  • Application → Cookies (Chrome, Edge) or Storage → Cookies (Firefox, Safari) lists the cookies for lattice-project.eu. The list is empty.
  • Application → Local Storage / Session Storage / IndexedDB are all empty too.
  • Network shows every request the page makes. Only two hosts appear: lattice-project.eu itself, and plausible.io for the visitor counter described below.

Why there is no consent banner

Article 5(3) of the ePrivacy Directive requires consent before a website stores information on, or reads information from, your device — unless the access is strictly necessary for something you asked for yourself. This site stores nothing. The one read it performs is the visitor counter checking local storage for the plausible_ignore opt-out flag described above: access whose only purpose is honouring your own choice not to be counted, which is exactly what the strict-necessity exemption exists for. There is nothing here to consent to, and a banner would have nothing to ask about.

We would rather build the site so that consent is unnecessary than ask you to click through a banner on every visit.

The visitor counter

We do use an analytics tool — Plausible Analytics — but it is cookieless and stores nothing on your device. When you open a page it sends a request containing the page address, the site domain, and the referring page if there was one. As you read, it also sends one or more engagement events for that page: how far down it you scrolled, and how long the page was visible and in the foreground. None of these requests carries an identifier of any kind.

If you would rather not be counted at all, set a plausible_ignore flag to true in your browser's local storage — the counter checks for it and stands down. That check is the one read described below.

Plausible does not store your IP address or user agent. It uses them, together with a salt that is rotated and deleted every 24 hours, to derive a daily counting hash, so the same visitor cannot be followed from one day to the next.

Plausible Insights OÜ is incorporated in Estonia and processes the data in the EU. The full detail of what we receive, and on what legal basis, is in the privacy policy.

Similar technologies

The site does not use device or browser fingerprinting, canvas fingerprinting, web beacons, tracking pixels, or any comparable technique. There is no login, no authenticated area, and no advertising of any kind.

If this ever changes

Zero cookies is a deliberate decision, not an accident of the current build. If we ever needed one that is not strictly necessary, we would:

  1. List it here in full — name, type, duration, purpose, first or third party, legal basis, and how to refuse it.
  2. Ask before setting it.
  3. Make refusing exactly as easy as accepting.
  4. Update the date at the foot of this page.
